Presentation of the IMRB

Created jointly by the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM; the French national institute for health and medical research) and the University of Paris Est Créteil Val de Marne, the Institut Mondor de Recherche Biomédicale (IMRB) brings together 14 mixed Inserm-University of Paris Est Créteil Val de Marne research teams, under 2 research pole.

Research pole of Functional regeneration and biotherapics

Research Pole of Medical genomics

Its 400 collaborators work in three major fields of health research:

 the etiology of genetic, metabolic, cancerous or viral diseases;
the development of gene and cell-based biotherapies;
the development of new pharmacological strategies for therapeutics.

Over the last five years, the research teams of the IMRB have authored more than 800 articles, of which 50 were published in journals with IF above 15.

The principal assets of the IMRB lie in:

its implantation, at the center of a strong pole for health and clinical research, including three hospitals, a general Clinical Investigation Center dedicated to Biotherapy, a Biological Resource Center, a Surgical Research Center, the cell therapy unit of the French Establishment of the Blood, as well as seven reference centers for rare diseases.

The Mental Health RTRS (FondaMental Foundation) in psychiatry created in 2007, as well as the cohort Psy-COH (Pr M.Leboyer) part of the new infrastructures of scientific excellency recently labelled and the Labex « Vaccinal Research Institute » (Pr Y. Levy) which relies on  the development of a new immunomonitoring core facility aimed at evaluating new immunological therapies according to international standards. A team of the IMRB is also contributing to the Labex « Institut d’Etude Cognitive » that is managed by the « Ecole Normale Supérieure ».

access to 5 core technological facilities for genomics, imaging, cell sorting and functional exploration of small animals, as well as three common animal houses (conventional, transgenic and large animal). Two of the platforms just get certfication of ISO 9001.

The IMRB teams are involved in five European projects, and participate in 81 collaborations worldwide, principally with laboratories in Europe and North America.

Expected impact on health/Expected health benefits

One hundred and thirty teaching doctors participate in the teams. Among them are the principal investigators of 116 clinical research protocols and epidemiologic investigations. These programs cover the majority of the research topics of the teams.

Valorizable activities

During the last five years, six teams of the IMRB have obtained 34 patents, for 9 of which a license for exploitation has been granted to companies. The majority of these patents have been obtained in the field of immunology. Inserm-transfert is currently following up 11 research collaboration contracts between the IMRB and private partners.

Private partnership contracts accounted for almost 8% of the total funding of the IMRB in 2006.

Since 2007, a valorization cell has been established at the IMRB, with the help of the Agglomération Plaine Centrale community, the University of Paris Est Créteil Val de Marne, and the regional council of the Val-de-Marne.

Procedures to obtain ISO 9001 certification for certain activities of the IMRB have also been started.
